Leadership
J.P. Grant
J.P. Grant is the founder and President of Grant Capital Management, Inc. He is a business innovator and brings his experience in entrepreneurial sales and management to public sector financing industry. Prior to founding Grant Capital Management, he held positions in Public Sector major account sales for IBM Corporation and Federal Data Corporation.
In addition to serving as President at Grant Capital Management, J.P. served as the lead director of MMA Capital Holdings (MMAC). As lead director, J.P. led the team that executed a successful sale of the company to Fundamental Advisors. During J.P.’s board tenure, the stock increased in value from $00.50 to $27.50.
His dedication to supporting his local community started shortly after college, by serving on the Schools and Scholarship Committee for Harvard University. He went on to serve on the following boards, American Red Cross, the McDonogh School, the Baltimore City Planning Commission, and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
J.P.’s dedicated support of nonprofits, community organizations, churches, governmental activities, and people in need is just part of Grant Capital’s DNA.
J.P. attended Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Derek Mitchell
Derek Mitchell serves as the senior vice president of Grant Capital Management. He is a professional with over 20 years of experience in business. He has held various roles, including sales, customer relationship management, training, and contracting within two Fortune 500 Companies (Johnson & Johnson and Novartis) prior to his tenure with Grant Capital Management.
Derek has managed Grant Capital’s working relationships with investors, vendors, and public sector clients for over 10 years. He has led the Grant Capital team in over $500 million of tax-exempt financing agreements. With a focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency and essential equipment, Derek routinely engages with officials from the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Association of Energy Service Companies (NAESCO), the Energy Services Coalition (ESC), and a host of other industry associations.
Additionally, Derek gives his time and energy advancing the lives of students at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) by serving as the Chairman of the CCBC Foundation Board.
Derek holds a B.S. in Marketing from Hampton University and an MBA in finance from Loyola University.
J.P. Grant IV
J.P. Grant IV serves as Senior Vice President at Grant Capital Management. He originates and structures tax-exempt lease-purchase financings for state and local governments, working with public works departments, finance officers, and procurement teams to fund essential equipment and infrastructure.
Prior to joining Grant Capital, J.P. spent six years building and managing strategic partnerships across the fintech sector spanning real estate, lending, debt management, and insurance. That work centered on negotiating and operationalizing complex vendor and revenue-share relationships, experience he applies to structuring financings for public sector clients. Earlier in his career, J.P. spent six years at Goldman Sachs where he worked with state and local governments, sports teams, infrastructure firms, and businesses that sell into and invest into those sectors. During his tenure he executed over $1 billion in tax-exempt principal for state and local governments.
J.P. serves on the McDonogh School's Board of Visitors and is an active member of the University of Pennsylvania Football Alumni community, organizing career preparation and networking programming for current players and recent graduates.
J.P. holds a B.S. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he played varsity football and won two Ivy League championships, and earned an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School.
